Devil's Lake State Park

April 2021

Devil’s Lake State Park was our first mini RV trip in early April 2021. Wisconsin’s largest state park contains peaks and valleys created by glacial movement. Located in the Baraboo area which is just south of Wisconsin Dells. Interesting fact about Baraboo is it became the headquarters of several circuses, including the Ringling Bros. Circus, and thus became known as Circus City.

Since this was our first trip in the RV, and it was so early in the summer, I was not expecting much.  David booked Devil’s Lake because it was one of the earliest, closest, opening RV parks around. Because we are new to RVing and have a new RV, we wanted to stay relatively close for the maiden voyage.

We totally lucked out on the weather. Early April is a total crap shoot- you never know if it’s going to trend hot, cold, or both.  Temperatures hovered in the 60’s which, to me and George, is perfect for hiking. Another benefit to going so early in the season- NO mosquitos, yay! BUT, one serious drawback was the spring hatch of lake flies (non-biting Midges)!!  We only encountered them while close to the lake, and thanks goodness they don’t bite because there were seriously, so many.  Since this was 2021, having a Covid mask with you came in super handy- we did not…☹️.

Devil’s Lake State Park had quite a few campers, RVs, and trailers for so early in the season, but I suppose with everyone so closed in because of Covid, people were jumping at a chance to go somewhere. The park consisted of a lot of young families with their dogs.  It was great people/dog watching.  We spent one day in Wisconsin Dells (no pictures) but otherwise just hiked around the camp.

Driftless Glen Distillery

One afternoon we visited the Driftless Glen Distillery in Baraboo.  The distillery was named because it is located within the Driftless Area in Wisconsin.  Because it’s located in the Driftless Area (area not covered by the last glacier), the region is rich with peat, bogs, an amazing aquifer, and uncommon sandy soil for their grains to grow. All of that combines to form their remarkable spirits.  David had a tasting of their gin while I had their bourbon rye old fashion 😋
